Do you have a split nail on your pinky toe?

Poll Started January 01, 2010 by Joe

I was searching for information on this and found out it's common in a lot of Chinese, but I'm not sure about other Asians. In fact, there's an ancient Chinese legend (but we all know how Chinese legends are) that says if you have the split toe nail, you're descended from the Yellow Emperor and therefore, true Han Chinese. It's also found to a much lesser extent in non-Asians, apparently.

How many of you hapas have the split pinky toenail? For those of you scratching your head, trying to figure out what the hell I'm talking about, look at your pinky toe. Do you have a tiny nail growing at the far end? Does it look broken off from the rest of your toenail or fused with it? Do you have to put socks on carefully cause it gets snagged on them? Maybe sometimes you have to exercise caution putting on a pair of pants too? Does it annoy you so much, you yank the sucker out? Then you have the split nail.

So do you have it? What kind? One foot or both? And what do you do about it?

  1. Choose one response that best describes your toe(s) and how you handle them.
  2. Then choose your nail type: loose or fused.
  3. If you only have it on one foot, please specify which foot you have it on.

Did you read the directions. I hope you did. ^_^

I had it on both, but I lost them in a freak accident. Toe nails grow slowly, so I'll bet it comes back in about a year. They used to get caught on my socks and could hurt if I wasn't careful, but I haven't had problems in a long time. Maybe they weren't always fused. I don't remember anymore.

I have no idea if anyone else has it in my family.

Oh my gosh, I had no idea what it was until now! But it was REALLY annoying, and I used to hate showing my feet because I thought it was odd, and no one else had it.

I pulledthe on on my right foot off/out yesterday, it hurt. T_T
I hope it stays away for a while, though. xD

This is so funny! I didn't realize what the heck that was on my foot, but I guess I understand it's a genetic thing related to race. I learned something new today haha

Wow! What a question!  I never really brought it to mind.  As I do seem to have this on both toes, am I considered to be "a true and genuine Han Chinese"?  From what I understand, Japanese come from a mix of Chinese, and Korean as well as perhaps Ainu, etc.  So me being a quarter Japanese, then I suppose that I have some very ancient ancestral relationship to (Han) Chinese?  Interesting.
