“A lot of people talk about wanting to make a difference--taking this small step means you are.”(teamkrissy.com)Join this group to support the bone marrow donation registry. Volunteer, register or donate money today to help ensure longer, healthier lives for patients in need! WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP:Race and ethnicity matter in tissue matchesBecause tissue types are inherited, patients are more likely to match someone from their own race or ethnicity. Adding more donors and cord blood units from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds to the NMDP Registry increases the likelihood that all patients will find the match they need. Your heritage can make all the difference. If you are from one of the following communities, you are urgently needed as a bone marrow donor or cord blood donor:--Black and African American --American Indian and Alaska Native --Asian --Native Hawaiian and other Pacific Islander --Hispanic and Latino --Multiple race Every year, more than 30,000 people are diagnosed with leukemia or other life-threatening blood diseases. Only 30% of all patients in need of a transplant find a matched donor within their family. On any given day, more than 3,000 patients are searching the NMDP registry for a matched donor.Only 2% of registered donors are of mixed race.--(Statistics from marrow.org)Minorities and especially people of mixed race heritages are in specific demand because it is much more difficult for those in need to find a match. Just think, it could be you one day that needs a match or a loved one so sign up today, you could save someone's life!***(The following are Hapas in need of a bone marrow transplant listed through A3M)Krissy Kobata is 26 and loves being with her friends and family. Also check out the widgets through her site that you can post on your profile here. Jordan Crowe is very bright and loving 3 year-old, half Vietnamese haft British boy who constantly brightens up the lives of those around him with his love for play and other activities. He is especially interested in stories, crafts, dinosaurs and Thomas the tank engine. At school he excels and focuses on the tasks given and continues with that interest at home . Since being diagnosed in April 2008 with the genetic form of HLH, 3 year-old Jordan has been strong in dealing with the clinical visits and chemotherapy. With what the doctors have gathered, the conclusion is Jordan needs a Bone marrow Transplant, the parents are hoping that Jordan will find a donor who can save his life.Stacy was diagnosed with MDS in October of 2006 and is in need of a bone marrow transplant. Her only brother is, unfortunately, not a match. Because of her mixed racial background (Korean/Caucasian), finding a match in the registry has been a challenge. She currently works as a Marketing Representative for an insurance company in San Diego and loves the outdoors, hiking, and taking her dogs to the park.Sam Cross was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on December 2006. He had no symptoms and the diagnosis was made after a routine blood test. Sam was enjoying a full life as a serious student, a captain of the Harvard fencing team, a member of the tennis club team and a regular volunteer at the student-run homeless shelter. In addition to academics and sports, Sam has always taken a lot of interest in helping people, including his work at the shelter and as an active tutor for underprivileged kids since high school. Sam is part Korean and part Caucasian, and this makes finding a match particularly difficult. Check out his website. www.helpsamiam.comJames Lee Erlandsen, now 23, was completing his degree in Geography at SFU and working at Save-on-Foods when on February 1st, 2007, he was diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. He is part Chinese and Caucasian, and has no siblins. His bone marrow is rare, and he needs as many registrants as possible to find a potential match. The best chances for a match would be from Eurasian donors. www.gunghaggisfatchoy.com/blog/_archives/2007/4/29/2914539.htmlMaile Lamela (3) is half Filipino and half Mexican/Puerto Rican. In 2007 she was diagnosed with and infant form of Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL). She was able to reach remission through chemotherapy, but her leukemia relapsed in June 2008 and she is now in an urgent need for a marrow/stem cell transplant. Because she is mixed, it will make her search that much more difficult. Her favorite cartoon characters are Dora and Diego, and Disney Princesses. Her favorite color is pink, and she loves polka dots. Help Maile and others like her, who are searching for their life saving match, by registering and being committed to be a potential marrow/stem cell donor.
