What is a similar word for "Vegan" in your culture?

Vegan is a word that is used by the "Vegan"society in the 1940's

I was eating "Shojin Ryori", a Japanese Buddhist term, before I knew the term Vegan or what Vegan meant. In Japanese culture, most people were vegetarian and ate little or no meat until the 1600's when Western culture travelled to Japan. Shojin Ryori is a style of cooking where one does not eat anything that embodies death of a living sentient creature (no eggs, or milk). Typically, people eat Shojin ryori style at a time when they mourn a loved one's death.

So, I am wondering if there is a term in your culture(s) that has a similar meaning to Vegan.
